Nowadays, the success of a company depends in many cases directly on the availability and performance of IT. Network and server failures and performance issues can have a direct impact on key business processes and therefore on a company's profitability.
DX SPECTRUM helps companies monitor their network infrastructure, servers and applications. A typical multi-vendor tool, DX SPECTRUM includes many fully integrated modules for monitoring network devices from leading vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, Brocade or Enterasys, or server agents for vendors such as HP, IBM or CA SystemEDGE.
In addition to the monitoring of end devices, DX SPECTRUM offers the possibility to monitor different IT technologies such as Layer2/3 Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), Multicast or Ouality of Service. The recognition of these technologies can be fully automated on request, so that the administrative maintenance effort is reduced to a minimum.
With its already extensive database, DX SPECTRUM can be implemented very quickly. The administrator does not have to configure a new monitoring for each device. DX SPECTRUM comes with numerous implementations, so that the actual monitoring can be started quickly after installation. In addition, all monitoring implementations included in the scope of delivery can be individually adapted to the needs of the company.
DX SPECTRUM also detects new devices, can model them in its database and correlate them with other devices, technologies or IT services. By understanding the relationships between devices, DX SPECTRUM can use a comprehensive root-cause analysis to identify potential sources of error and help solve a problem quickly. This dramatically reduces the average repair time (MTTR) from hours to minutes.
Automated Root Cause Analysis
One of the most important features of DX SPECTRUM is the automatic error isolation through alarm and event correlation. This works on the basis of the object-oriented network model in the DX SPECTRUM and the patented Inductive Modeling Technology, largely without the need for time-consuming rules. This means that only alarm messages from objects that are actually faulty are generated.
The recognized error causes are thus displayed in concrete terms and can be quickly remedied. The effects on the network, services, and customers are immediately visible. No alarm is triggered for the symptoms of a failure, these are hidden by the DX SPECTRUM and added to the actual problem as an effect.
Modern auto-discovery technologies largely automate the maintenance of the network model – yet the administrator retains full control over the configuration. Based on various discovery information such as manufacturer-specific protocols, routing or MAC tables, DX SPECTRUM automatically detects connections between devices and displays them graphically.
In addition to purely physical information, DX SPECTRUM also provides more and more logical information, which is particularly important in the ATM and VLAN environment. The already mentioned multi-vendor support and integrated element managers from various hardware manufacturers enable complex management.
In addition to LAN management, WAN management and the management of virtual networks are becoming increasingly important. The DX SPECTRUM VPN Manager, QoS Manager, and Multicast Manager, for example, can provide very detailed help here.
Server systems can also be recognized and monitored by the DX SPECTRUM. DX SPECTRUM also recognizes the connections between servers and switches and models them graphically. If a network device fails, it is also immediately apparent which servers, and thus which applications, are affected.
Event and Alarm Management
DX SPECTRUM distinguishes between events and alarms. Not every event is critical and must, therefore, trigger an alarm. DX SPECTRUM provides a powerful concept for event and alarm management. The scope of delivery includes comprehensive rules and regulations on how and when an alarm is to be triggered during an event.
DX SPECTRUM can be easily adapted by an administrator via the OneClick GUI. The administrator can create simple rules based on parameters, frequency, pairs or sequences, or configure complex correlations (mostly based on empirical values stored in the system).
Scalable management system
As the company network grows, DX SPECTRUM also grows with it. The solution can be used in a distributed environment so that a new server can be installed if required, which can be quickly and easily integrated into the existing DX SPECTRUM landscape. Changes to the existing CA SPECTRUM systems can then be quickly and easily transferred to the new server.
The DX SPECTRUM OneClick Client provides the user with a tool with which he can perform both operational and administrative tasks. DX SPECTRUM has a comprehensive role and rights concept that allows different roles to be implemented via one client. These concepts can also be used to configure a client-capable system that can be used by different customers at the same time.
Integrated configuration management
The DX SPECTRUM Network Configuration Manager enables the integration of error and configuration management functions. DX SPECTRUM can automatically download the new version and save it in its own database if changes are made to the device configurations. In case of problems, this information can be used for analysis. It is precisely these changes to the configuration that are a frequent cause of malfunctions.
An operator can use the Configuration Manager to display which changes have been made in the configuration and pass this information on to a responsible administrator. The quick assignment of these changes ensures fast problem identification and troubleshooting.
Integrated Service Level Management
The Service Manager completes the arc of service and business process management: All resources already known in DX SPECTRUM can be grouped into services and business processes. With the SLA/BPM tool it is possible to define business processes (e.g. “e-commerce”), to assign the objects involved (network, system, application) and to monitor them via predefined rules, to analyze weak points and to assign corresponding costs.
The effort for this mapping depends strongly on the technological structure of the management platform; here the object-oriented approach clearly shows its strengths. Since DX SPECTRUM contains objects in its core (e.g. a Unix system) and the relationship between the individual objects (e.g. SAP R3 Client is connected to Switch A/PortB), the task of defining an SLA/BP is simply to add new relationships to the corresponding objects (e.g. SAP R3 Client belongs to BP SAP R3). The rest of the work is then done by the correlation engine integrated in DX SPECTRUM. The entire process of defining a business process is done via “Drag and Drop” (no cumbersome coding of rules) and supported by corresponding templates, so that both the definition and the necessary adjustments can be managed with little personnel and time.
Virtual environment monitoring
With the strong growth and increasing importance of virtual environments in companies, it is becoming increasingly important to be able to monitor these environments comprehensively and in detail. With the DX SPECTRUM Virtual Host Manager, DX SPECTRUM is able to detect, model and comprehensively monitor virtual environments such as VMWare, Solaris Zones or IBM LPARs fully automatically. The central management solutions such as VMWare VCenter or Solaris global Zones are used to obtain the corresponding information about the virtual systems.Virtual environment monitoring
DX SPECTRUM is able to monitor the availability of both virtual and physical systems as well as the performance of the virtual environment. Special features such as VMotion are also recognized and promptly implemented in DX SPECTRUM fully automatically.
The DX SPECTRUM error analysis also works with virtual environments. If a physical system fails, no alarm is triggered for the inaccessibility of the virtual systems lying on it; rather, it is represented as the effect of the failure.
IP Routing Manager
The DX SPECTRUM IP Routing Manager (IPRM) is used to monitor the status of IP routing protocols. With the integration of the Route Explorer Appliance from Packet Design, DX SPECTRUM is able to visualize and monitor a “routed” Layer 3 topology. This makes it very easy to track and monitor the path of packets from Host A to Host B via the OneClick Client.
Überwachung von VPNs/MPLS
DX SPECTRUM ist in der Lage, VPNs, die über einen externen Provider laufen, zu modellieren und zu überwachen. Je nach Zugriffsmöglichkeit auf die Providerrouter kommen dabei verschiedene Module zum Einsatz.
Wenn nur ein Zugriff auf den CE-Router möglich ist, verwendet CA SPECTRUM den Enterprise VPN Manager, mit dem das Interface zum Provider hin überwacht wird.
Ist dagegen ein Zugriff auf die PE-Router möglich, wird DX SPECTRUM das Modul VPN-Manager verwenden, mit dem gezielt die VPNs zwischen unterschiedlichen Standorten überwacht werden.
Stellt der Provider Layer2-VPNs zur Verfügung, kann das Modul VPLS-Manager in DX SPECTRUM verwendet werden. Provider mit eigenem MPLS-Netzwerk können mit Hilfe des Add-ons MPLS-Manager den Kern des MPLS-Netzes modellieren und überwachen.
Je nach verwendetem Modul besitzt DX SPECTRUM unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten die Verbindungen zwischen den Endpunkten zu überwachen, indem z.B. ein Ping oder Tracroute über das VPN ausgeführt wird.
Durch die vollständige Integration mit CA eHealth wird ein durchgängiger Workflow in den Bereichen Fault- und Performance-Management sichergestellt. Die überwachten Komponenten können automatisch zwischen DX SPECTRUM und eHealth synchronisiert werden. Die von eHealth erkannten Performance-Alarmmeldungen werden zentral in der DX SPECTRUM Alarmkonsole dargestellt und gehen in die Root Cause Analyse und Business Service Ansichten ein. Zur Analyse können eHealth-Reports direkt aus dem DX SPECTRUM OneClick Client abgerufen werden.
Weitere Integrationsoptionen sichern die Integration mit Helpdesk-Systemen wie z.B. Remedy/BMC ARS oder anderen OSS-Systemen.
